I recently finished my competition entry for the Macmillan Children’s book prize. I illustrated the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast so I could focus on my illustrations alone rather than writing a book from scratch. The competition requires four full colour spreads, endpapers and a full dummy of the book in a rough format to demonstrate composition. This was a big project and I’ve learnt a great deal along the way. There is a lot to think about when producing a picture book including character design, composition, text and layout, colour, mood and tone. Getting them all to work together in a new and interesting way is a difficult task especially in a limited amount of time. But I’m pleased with the results and hope to see this project through to completion at some point. I’m sure there will be changes along the way but in the mean time here is a selection of my submitted spreads. Over the coming weeks I will post more about the process along with my sketchbook work and doodles.
